Diabetes Awareness and Prevention Program.

The NCPEI diabetes program has been funded through Health Canada MOAUPP program The diabetes program has been funded since 2000and will run until 2009. The objective of the program is to increase awareness of diabetes, it's risk factors and the value of Healthy Lifestyles practices It is also to increase ownership and capacity to our members to combat diabetes.

Some activities that take place within the program are:

  • Maintain and update our resource Center on diabetes prevention Health promotion and everyday meals cook books etc
  • Set up information booths and make presentations during Health Events throughout the province
  • Publish quarterly new letters to distribute to our members on Diabetes updates, food choices
  • Provide information on diabetes prevention Lifestyle changes and the important of screening for diabetes
  • Home visits to members in urban areas passing out information on diabetes
  • Cooking Classes where participants meet with our dietician and project co-ordinator to plan prepare and share healthy meals
  • Shopping Tours
  • Food Co-op - Fruit and vegetables are bought from local growers and sold to our members at cost vPartner with Health Professionals to make presentations with members on topics obtaining to diabetes
  • Budget shopping includes our youth and members on affordable ways to eat healthy vExercise programs through out the year , Pow-wow dancing, Yoga, Walking Club, Biggest Loser, Tae Bo
  • Partner with Aboriginal groups and the Canadian Diabetes Association on all Health Issue

The Wellness Co-ordinator, Brenda Bradford, holds weekly sessions on Mondays at lunch time between 12:00 and 1:00pm. Anyone interested please contact NCPEI at 892-5314.
